How business owners can use gratitude to be better leaders

Have you ever read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day? It’s a childrens book about a young boy who has a bad case of the Mondays — wakes up with gum in his hair, trips on a skateboard, the dentist tells him he has a cavity and the list goes on. He’s having a bad day.

As business owners, we have bad days, too. An employee is not performing, we get a huge tax bill, a client won’t pay his invoice… the list goes on. As the author of the book would put it, sometimes we have terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days. And sometimes they last weeks, or quarters.

But as the boss, we can’t keep our head down and feet in the dirt. If we wallow in our woes and stuck in negativity, we’ll never get out of the rut. We need to keep our head up, above the water so we can find out way out.

So how do we do that?


Louis CK was on Conan a while back where he talked about how we live in an amazing world, but we complain all the time! We have smart phones that connect us to anyone in the world in a split second. We can ask the internet virtually any question and get the answer. But how often to we complain about it? (You gotta watch this clip)

There is so much that we have to be grateful for. And there are so many benefits of gratitude. From health and leadership benefits and increased happiness, having an attitude of gratitude does the body and soul a lot of good.
